Photographer and professor Brian Lawler received the Educator of the Year for Higher Education award from the Electronic Document Systems Foundation.

Lawler won this award for his 30 years in the photography, typography and prepress industries. His other work has included consulting for Kodak, Apple, Hewlett-Packard, Adobe Systems, Epson and Nikon. He has also written articles for WhatTheyThink.com and Graphic Arts Monthly.

The Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester, Mass., has named the recipients of its annual Focus Awards. One of this year's winners is Albuquerque-based David Bram, founder of Fraction magazine.

Bram received the Rising Star award, which is given each year to emerging contributors in the photography community. His online publication focuses on alternatives to physical galleries and predominantly features the work of new artists.

The Portland Art Museum (PAM) has hired Julia Dolan as its photography curator. Most recently, she was the Horace W. Goldsmith Curatorial Fellow in Photography at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Louie Psihoyos of Boulder, Colo., won a 2010 Academy Award for Best Documentary for "The Cove," a film about efforts to save thousands of dolphins from being brutally slaughtered every year in Taiji, Japan. The film also spotlighted the region's practice of serving dolphin meat tainted with mercury to schoolchildren.

In April, the Frans Lanting Studio included three of Frans Lanting's images in the gala international Green Auction by Christie's auction house in New York City.

The auction, held on the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, donated proceeds to conservation organizations, including Conservation International, Oceana and the Natural Resources Defense Council. Chosen images included "Water Lilies, Botswana 1989," "Tortoises at Dawn, Galapagos Islands 1984," and "Twilight of the Giants, Botswana 1989."

Seattle photographer Art Wolfe has won five Silver Telly Awards recognizing outstanding achievement in video and film production for local, regional and cable television.
